Still Using Odoo 17? A 25% Legacy Surcharge Could Apply From March 2027

Businesses running Odoo 17 could face an additional 25% annual subscription charge starting around March 2027.

This isn't speculation. Odoo's official Enterprise Subscription Agreement includes a legacy surcharge for customers running versions outside its three most recent major releases.

If your business is still using Odoo 17, now is a good time to review your subscription and start planning an upgrade.

What Is the Odoo 25% Legacy Surcharge?

Odoo's Enterprise Subscription Agreement states that customers using versions older than its three most recent major releases may be charged an additional 25% of their annualized subscription price.

With Odoo 20 released in September 2026, the three most recent major versions are:

  • Odoo 20
  • Odoo 19
  • Odoo 18

Odoo 17 is no longer among these covered versions.

The surcharge is calculated using the customer's applicable per-user pricing and user counts, including Light Users where applicable under the agreement.

When Does the Odoo 17 Surcharge Start?

Under Odoo's published terms, the legacy surcharge is charged once per year and no earlier than six months after a new major version is released.

For Odoo 17, this means the surcharge could begin around March 2027.

March 31, 2027 is not a universal billing deadline. The actual timing and applicability depend on the customer's subscription agreement.

Importantly, this is a potential additional subscription charge, not an announcement that all Odoo 17 databases will shut down.

How Much Could Staying on Odoo 17 Cost?

The additional expense depends on your annualized Odoo subscription price.

Annual SubscriptionPotential 25% Surcharge
$5,000$1,250
$10,000$2,500
$20,000$5,000
$40,000$10,000

For businesses already considering an Odoo upgrade, this additional cost is another reason to stop delaying the decision.

How to Avoid the Odoo 17 Legacy Surcharge

Upgrade to one of Odoo's currently covered versions before the surcharge applies to your subscription.

However, an Odoo upgrade requires more than moving your database to a newer version.

Before upgrading, businesses should review:

  • Custom modules and third-party integrations
  • Existing business processes and workflows
  • Accounting and inventory data accuracy
  • User permissions and configuration changes
  • Testing, validation, and cutover requirements

A properly planned upgrade reduces the risk of carrying existing problems into a new version.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Odoo 17 have a 25% surcharge?

Under Odoo's current Enterprise subscription terms, databases running versions outside the three most recent major releases are subject to a 25% annual legacy surcharge. Odoo 17 falls outside that range following the release of Odoo 20.

Will Odoo 17 stop working in March 2027?

No universal Odoo 17 shutdown is scheduled for March 2027. The date relates to the earliest potential application of the legacy surcharge, not an automatic shutdown.

How do I avoid the Odoo 17 legacy surcharge?

Upgrading to a currently covered Odoo version removes the version-related condition for the surcharge. Businesses should confirm their specific contract terms and upgrade timing with Odoo.
