Apply Landed Cost on Transfer Lines

The Apply Landed Cost on Transfer Lines feature allows users to apply landed costs at a granular stock move line level instead of applying them to an entire transfer or manufacturing order, enabling more accurate and controlled cost allocation.

In standard Odoo behavior, landed costs can only be applied at a high level—either on entire Transfers or Manufacturing Orders. While this works for simple logistics scenarios, it becomes limiting when a single transfer contains multiple products, and only certain items should absorb specific landed costs such as freight, duties, or handling charges.

The Apply Landed Cost on Transfer Lines SME extends the Landed Cost functionality by introducing a third option in the “Apply On” field:

  • Transfer Line

When this option is selected, the landed cost workflow becomes more precise and flexible.

How it Works:

  • A Transfers field becomes mandatory, just like in the standard “Transfers” option.
  • Once a transfer is selected, a new Many2many field called Stock Move Lines appears.
  • This field dynamically lists all stock move lines belonging to the selected transfer.
  • If no transfer is selected, the Stock Move Lines field remains empty.
  • Users can select specific stock move lines to which the landed cost should apply.

The computation and valuation logic remain fully aligned with Odoo’s standard landed cost behavior. The SME only refines where the cost is applied—not how it is calculated—ensuring consistency with existing accounting and inventory valuation rules.

This enhancement is especially useful in mixed transfers, partial shipments, or scenarios where different products within the same transfer incur different landed cost components.

Key Benefits

  • Granular Cost Control: Apply landed costs to individual stock move lines instead of entire transfers.
  • Improved Cost Accuracy: Ensures landed costs are allocated only to relevant products.
  • Flexible Logistics Handling: Ideal for mixed shipments and partial cost allocations.
  • No Accounting Disruption: Uses standard landed cost computation logic.
  • User-Friendly Workflow: Automatically filters move lines based on selected transfers.
  • Better Inventory Valuation: More precise product-level costing.

Example Use Case

A company receives a shipment containing fragile equipment and standard spare parts under the same transfer. Only the fragile items incur additional handling and insurance costs.

With this feature:

  • The user selects Apply On → Transfer Line.
  • Chooses the relevant transfer.
  • Selects only the move lines related to the fragile equipment.
  • Applies the landed cost only to those items.

As a result, inventory valuation reflects true product costs without inflating the cost of unrelated items.

Conclusion

The Apply Landed Cost on Transfer Lines SME significantly enhances landed cost flexibility in Odoo by enabling line-level application without altering core valuation logic. This feature delivers precise cost allocation, improved inventory accuracy, and better financial insights—making it a powerful addition for organizations with complex logistics and costing requirements.
