Odoo 20 is shaping up to be more than another annual ERP update.
Based on the roadmap presented at Odoo Partner Days 2026, the direction is clear: Odoo is moving toward deeper AI assistance, fewer disconnected workflows, better mobile usability, and more automation across everyday business processes. The roadmap is not the final release list, so individual features can still change before launch.
For businesses already running Odoo, that raises two important questions: What is actually changing, and should you start preparing for Odoo 20 now?

When Will Odoo 20 Be Released?
Odoo has confirmed that Odoo 20 will be released during Odoo Experience 2026, taking place in Brussels from September 24–26, 2026. Odoo's event page specifically says attendees will get their first look at the latest version as it is released during the event.
That does not mean every existing Odoo customer should plan an upgrade for September 24.
A new major version becoming available and an existing production environment being ready to migrate are two different things. Businesses with custom modules, integrations, complex accounting configurations, manufacturing workflows, or third-party applications should evaluate compatibility and test their environment before treating Odoo 20 as a routine update.
At Silverdale, that distinction matters. The goal of an upgrade should never simply be to get onto the newest version. The goal is to improve the system without compromising the processes and financial controls already running the business.
What Is New in Odoo 20?
The most important change may not be any single application.
Odoo 20 appears to be moving the platform from software that records and manages work toward software that increasingly assists with performing the work itself.
Here are the areas we believe businesses should pay closest attention to.
1. AI Moves From Answers to Actions
AI has been appearing throughout recent Odoo releases, but Odoo 20's roadmap points toward a much more operational role.
One planned capability allows users to interact with records across the database using natural language. Instead of navigating through records individually, a user could ask Odoo to find information, summarize activity, create records, or make updates based on instructions.
Examples presented around the roadmap include:
- Finding and summarizing information across Odoo.
- Reassigning CRM leads based on criteria.
- Creating project structures from technical documents.
- Summarizing Helpdesk conversations.
- Suggesting responses based on previous tickets.
- Assisting with timesheet entries.
- Helping identify financial anomalies.
Odoo 20 is also expected to include a native Model Context Protocol (MCP) server in Enterprise, providing a standardized way for external AI assistants to communicate with Odoo. Early capabilities described in roadmap coverage are primarily read-oriented, with write capabilities requiring administrative enablement.
Why this matters
The opportunity isn't simply "having AI in your ERP."
The real value comes when AI understands the context of a business process and can reduce the manual steps required to complete it.
That also introduces a new implementation question: What should AI be allowed to do?
Creating a draft response is one thing. Updating financial, inventory, customer, or project records is another.
Organizations adopting these capabilities will need to think carefully about permissions, validation, process ownership, and auditability.
2. Accounting Continues Moving Toward Automation
Accounting is another area receiving meaningful attention.
One particularly practical planned improvement is the ability to initiate vendor payments from Odoo through payment batches, rather than moving between Odoo and banking workflows unnecessarily.
The roadmap also points toward improvements including automatic balancing entries during reconciliation for situations such as exchange-rate differences or accruals, more flexible tax-inclusive/exclusive pricing, and support for multiple validated business identifiers on partner records.
Odoo is also exploring AI-assisted financial analysis designed to identify anomalies and make financial information easier to understand.
Why this matters
Accounting improvements should not be judged by how many clicks they remove.
They should be judged by whether they improve financial integrity.
Automation is valuable when the underlying accounting configuration is correct. If accounts, taxes, reconciliation rules, inventory valuation, costing, or operational processes are wrong, automating them simply allows incorrect information to move faster.
That is why businesses considering Odoo 20 should use the upgrade as an opportunity to review their accounting configuration rather than simply migrating it unchanged.
3. Manufacturing and Inventory Get More Operational
For manufacturers, several planned changes deserve attention.
The Odoo 20 roadmap includes redesigned Manufacturing Order and Work Order Kanban views intended to provide clearer visibility into work in progress, production loads, deadlines, and planning.
PLM is also expected to receive an ECO overview that makes it easier to understand Bill of Materials changes and their cost implications.
Inventory changes discussed in the roadmap include a simplified On Hand inventory experience, logistics improvements, location-based push routes, and pre-encoded scannable packages for receipts.
Why this matters for manufacturers
Manufacturing ERP problems rarely exist because the system lacks another screen.
The real problems are usually things like:
- inaccurate WIP,
- incorrect costing,
- poor production visibility,
- inventory discrepancies,
- delayed work orders,
- uncontrolled BoM changes,
- and processes that don't match what actually happens on the floor.
Better production interfaces can make those processes easier to operate, but the underlying manufacturing model still has to be right.
For manufacturers evaluating Odoo 20, we would pay particular attention to how the new capabilities affect WIP visibility, production planning, inventory accuracy, BoM governance, and costing.
4. Field Service and Planning Become More Connected
Odoo is also reducing some of the separation between Field Service and Planning.
The roadmap shows Field Service becoming more deeply integrated into Planning, creating a more unified approach to resources, employees, tasks, schedules, materials, and field activity. Planning improvements are expected to include enhanced Gantt and map functionality, travel-time visibility, routing optimization, and technician tracking.
For organizations managing technicians or distributed teams, this could reduce the amount of coordination required between scheduling and execution.
It also reflects a broader Odoo 20 theme: fewer boundaries between applications and more end-to-end workflows.
5. A Major Mobile Experience Update
Odoo 20 is expected to introduce a substantially redesigned mobile interface.
Forms and actions are being reconsidered specifically for smaller screens and touch interaction rather than simply presenting a reduced version of the desktop interface.
This could be particularly important for:
- warehouse teams,
- field technicians,
- sales representatives,
- managers,
- production employees,
- and anyone who regularly interacts with Odoo away from a desk.
Offline capabilities are also progressing, although businesses should be careful not to interpret the roadmap as confirmation of unrestricted full offline operation. Current roadmap reporting points specifically to improvements such as offline search of previous queries.
6. Website, eCommerce and Marketing Get More Connected
Odoo 20 also looks significant for teams using Odoo beyond the back office.
Expected website improvements include better performance, SEO enhancements, redirect management, structured data improvements and AI-assisted website editing.
eCommerce additions in the roadmap include capabilities such as:
- automated cross-selling,
- improved return management,
- catalog improvements,
- rating requests,
- promotion progress indicators,
- and additional marketplace integrations.
Marketing Automation is also expected to receive a more visual workflow builder supporting channels and actions such as email, SMS, WhatsApp, activities, delays, filters, splits and AI-assisted steps.
The larger story is integration.
Odoo is continuing to connect the customer journey across marketing, commerce, sales, fulfillment and finance rather than treating each application as an isolated tool.
7. Odoo Phone Becomes Much More Serious
One of the more interesting additions in the Odoo 20 roadmap is an expansion of Odoo's phone capabilities.
Plans include purchasing phone numbers directly through Odoo across many countries and configuring call flows visually, including queues, time conditions, geographic routing and holiday calendars.
Odoo is also planning synchronized audio/video playback and transcripts inside its communication tools, making conversations easier to review and act on.
For businesses currently stitching together CRM, VoIP and call-management platforms, this could be worth watching closely.
8. Knowledge and Documents Become Easier to Govern
Odoo 20 is expected to improve how Documents and Knowledge are shared.
Instead of granting access primarily user by user, teams will be able to share content with groups, making it easier to maintain departmental or project-based knowledge environments.
Knowledge articles are also expected to gain additional publishing capabilities.
These may sound like smaller improvements, but they address an important operational problem: keeping procedures, documentation and institutional knowledge accessible without creating another administrative burden.
9. Electronic Signatures Become More Automated
Odoo Sign is expected to become more closely connected to operational workflows.
Signature requests can be triggered by workflow changes or automated actions, with signers determined dynamically from record information or configured in advance.
Think about a contract moving to an approved stage and automatically being sent to the appropriate customer contact.
The important change isn't Sign itself.
It's the removal of another manual handoff between "this is ready" and "send this for signature."
10. Performance and Scalability Continue to Mature
Odoo's ambitions increasingly extend beyond small and midsize implementations.
One important architectural development highlighted in roadmap reporting is greater use of read-replica database architecture, where heavy read operations such as dashboards and reporting can be handled separately from the primary database workload.
For smaller environments, this may not change much.
For larger Odoo deployments with substantial transaction volumes, reporting workloads, locations and concurrent users, improvements to database architecture can become considerably more important than another front-end feature.
The roadmap also points toward Owl 3 and a newer external JSON-2 API as part of Odoo's continuing technical evolution.
What Does Odoo 20 Mean for Existing Odoo Customers?
This is where we would encourage some restraint.
Don't plan an upgrade simply because Odoo 20 has more features.
Start by asking: Which Odoo 20 improvements solve problems we actually have?
If your organization is struggling with production planning, perhaps the Manufacturing changes matter. If accounting involves excessive manual reconciliation, examine the financial improvements.
If field teams struggle with scheduling, investigate the Planning changes.
If employees are spending hours searching, summarizing and manually updating information, AI capabilities may provide significant value.
But if your current Odoo environment has:
- broken workflows,
- excessive customizations,
- poor master data,
- inaccurate inventory,
- unreliable financial reporting,
- undocumented processes,
- or integrations nobody fully understands,
an upgrade alone will not solve those problems.
In some cases, it can expose them.
Should You Upgrade to Odoo 20 Immediately?
For most established Odoo environments, we would not make that decision today. Odoo 20 has not been released yet, and Odoo itself characterizes its roadmap as provisional. The final feature set will become clearer at launch.
Instead, businesses should start preparing.
Before upgrading, we recommend reviewing:
Customizations
Which custom modules are still necessary? Which were created years ago because standard Odoo couldn't support a requirement that may now be native?
Integrations
Document every external connection and determine whether APIs, middleware and custom connectors remain compatible.
Accounting
Validate your chart of accounts, taxes, reconciliation processes, inventory valuation and financial reporting before carrying them into another version.
Manufacturing
Review BoMs, routings, costing, work centers, WIP and inventory processes before migrating.
Data
An upgrade is an excellent opportunity to address duplicate, obsolete or inconsistent master data.
Processes
Most importantly, determine whether the way your organization uses Odoo still reflects the way the business actually operates.
An ERP upgrade should not preserve five years of process drift simply because those processes already exist.

It also increases the importance of getting the fundamentals right.
AI cannot compensate for poor master data. Automation cannot fix an incorrect accounting structure. A new manufacturing interface cannot correct a broken production process. And an upgrade cannot replace implementation discipline.
For businesses already using Odoo, Odoo 20 should therefore be treated as an opportunity to reassess the system, not simply update it.
